Parts of a High Pressure Needle Valve and What Each Part Does

Picking a needle valve for very high pressure is not a small decision. If your work involves hydraulic and pneumatic testing, pressure sampling and calibration, instrumentation lines or chemical and gas injection, the valve has to be ready for the pressure your system runs at.

That is where the HP series comes in. These needle valves are precision-engineered for flow control and shut-off in extreme pressure environments, and they go up to 60,000 psi. In this blog, we walk you through the parts and features of the series, the three pressure ratings, and the tubing and nipples that go with the valve, so you know what to look at before you decide.

What Is the HP Series?

The HP series is the range of HP needle valves from YDB Valves, made for demanding pressure applications. It is designed for safety, durability and reliability in critical operations across oil and gas, petrochemical and hydraulic systems.

Three ratings are on offer: 30,000, 40,000 and 60,000 psi. The standard construction is 316 stainless steel, and if your application needs something different, custom material options are available. Other features of the series include a compact, corrosion-resistant body, a stem tip that does not rotate, and leak-tight performance under high-pressure cycles. You can also ask for a replaceable seat design or for air actuation.

Let us now go through the parts one by one.

The Parts You Should Know About

The Body

Start with the body. In the HP series it is compact and corrosion-resistant, and it is made of 316 stainless steel as standard. Custom material options are available if you need them. At the top end of the range, the 60,000 psi valve has a reinforced construction that works together with corrosion resistance and thermal stability, so that it can handle extreme pressures.

The Stem Tip

Next is the stem tip. In the HP series, the tip does not rotate, and this prevents galling. You will find this feature listed for the 40,000 psi valve, which is made for higher pressure systems.

The Seat

The seat is where you have a choice. A replaceable seat design is available as an option in the HP series, so if you want it, you can ask for it. It is listed among the features and benefits of the series.

The Packing

Then comes the packing. The 40,000 psi valve has secure packing for enhanced leak prevention, and it sits in the same valve as the non-rotating stem tip. For the series as a whole, leak-tight performance under high-pressure cycles is one of the key features.

The Connections

The 30,000 psi valve is a robust two-way shut-off valve, and its connections are coned and threaded. The nipples that go with the series are coned and threaded as well, and the tubing is listed with its own connection types, which we cover in the tubing section below.

Air Actuation

If you want the valve to be air actuated, you can have it. Air actuation is available on request.

Which Pressure Rating Fits Your Application?

The range is categorized by pressure rating, so your choice starts with the pressure of your system. If you are choosing between the three ratings, this is how the series describes each one.

30,000 psi. For moderate high-pressure applications, this valve is ideal. It is a robust two-way shut-off valve with coned and threaded connections, and it gives excellent control and longevity.

40,000 psi. Working at higher pressure? The 40,000 psi valve is a trusted solution for such systems. The non-rotating stem tip and the secure packing in this valve are there for enhanced leak prevention.

60,000 psi. For extreme pressures, this is the top-tier valve of the HP series. Its reinforced construction, corrosion resistance and thermal stability are what let it handle extreme pressures.

Where Will You Use It?

The HP series is used across oil and gas, petrochemical and hydraulic systems. In practice, the main applications are hydraulic and pneumatic testing, pressure sampling and calibration, isolating instrumentation lines, and chemical and gas injection lines.

What About the Tubing?

The tubing used with the HP series is cold drawn and seamless. It is supplied in hard condition, which means it is not annealed, and its tensile strength is approximately 40 percent higher than that of annealed tubing. Manufacturing follows strict specifications so that tolerances and bore quality are maintained.

Stock lengths run from 18 to 22 feet, and shorter lengths can be ordered. The 1/8 inch tubing sizes may be coiled for shipment, while the larger sizes are shipped straight.

Seven tubing sizes are listed, from 1/8 inch up to 1 inch outside diameter. Four of them are rated for 60,000 psi: the 1/8 inch by 0.020 inch, the 1/4 inch by 0.083 inch, the 3/8 inch by 1/8 inch and the 9/16 inch by 3/16 inch sizes. One is rated for 40,000 psi, which is the 9/16 inch by 1/4 inch size. Two are rated for 30,000 psi, which are the 1/8 inch by 0.040 inch and the 1 inch by 0.437 inch sizes.

Each size has its own connection type: HF2 for 1/8 inch, HF4 for 1/4 inch, HF6 for 3/8 inch, HF9 for 9/16 inch and HF16 for 1 inch. All sizes are available in 316 SS, and the 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 9/16 inch sizes are also available in 304 SS.

And the Nipples, Collars and Glands?

Nipples for the series are coned and threaded, and they are stocked in 304 and 316 stainless steel. Stocked lengths run from 2 inch to 12 inch depending on the tubing size, and lengths other than those stocked are supplied upon request. The two 1/8 inch sizes are stocked in 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 12 inch lengths. The 1/4 inch by 0.083 inch size comes in 2 3/4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch lengths, and the 3/8 inch by 1/8 inch size comes in 3, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch lengths. Both 9/16 inch sizes are stocked in 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch lengths, and the 1 inch by 0.437 inch size is stocked in 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch lengths.

One thing to keep in mind while ordering: collars and glands do not come with the nipples unless you specify them when placing the order.

Order codes tell you the size and length. For example, 60-HM2-2 is a 2 inch nipple in the 1/8 inch by 0.020 inch size, 30-HM2-2 is a 2 inch nipple in the 1/8 inch by 0.040 inch size, 60-HM6-3 is a 3 inch nipple in the 3/8 inch by 1/8 inch size, 60-HM4-2.75 is a 2 3/4 inch nipple in the 1/4 inch by 0.083 inch size, 40-HM9-4 is a 4 inch nipple in the 9/16 inch by 1/4 inch size, and 30-HM16-6 is a 6 inch nipple in the 1 inch by 0.437 inch size.

What Is the HP Series Made Of?

The standard construction is 316 stainless steel, and custom material options are available. The tubing is offered in 316 SS and 304 SS, and the nipples are stocked in 304 and 316 stainless steel.

What Choices Does the Series Give You?

The HP series gives you a few clear choices when you place an order. You can pick the pressure rating, which is 30,000, 40,000 or 60,000 psi. You can keep the standard 316 stainless steel construction or ask for a custom material. You can add a replaceable seat design, and you can ask for air actuation. For the tubing, you can pick the size and the material, 316 SS or 304 SS where both are listed. For the nipples, you can pick the length, and you can decide whether you want collars and glands, since these are supplied only when specified.
